Best Strategy Board Games: A 2026 Standout Newcomer

Ask ten hobbyists for the best strategy board games and you will get ten different shelves, and honestly that is the fun of it. My own list mixes proven heavyweights with whatever newcomer has earned a spot lately. Titles like Brass: Birmingham, Root and Twilight Imperium still anchor most collections, and deservedly so, because they reward the kind of long-term planning that defines good strategy board games. This year, though, a fresh face has muscled its way onto my list: a tabletop MOBA called Trials of MAYA, currently in preview on Gamefound. I have not played the final copy, but the previews make a strong case.

Proven picks among the best strategy board games

Before the newcomer, a quick nod to the staples. Brass: Birmingham remains a masterclass in economic tension. Root turns asymmetry into a knife fight of competing win conditions. Terraforming Mars keeps the engine-building crowd busy for hours. Each of these has earned its place, and none of them is going anywhere. A great list is not about knocking down favorites, it is about knowing which game to reach for on a given night.

Trials of MAYA, the standout newcomer

Where Trials of MAYA earns its spot is asymmetry with real teeth. Unfiltered Gamer gives it his seal of approval, calling it “probably one of my favorite tactics games I’ve tried in… the whole year.” His highest praise is for the champions: “Every character feels exceptionally different in this game and it’s very heavily noticeable… It is literally everything to do with your character that is yours and very, very unique.” Rahdo Runs Through zeroes in on the engine underneath. He calls it a solid arena game made very special by its card play system: “The card play system is my favorite thing in this game.” He also praises the deck construction that keeps it “feeling different and fresh every time you play.” That is the replay depth I want from anything on a best-of list.

What is Trials of MAYA?

Trials of MAYA is an expandable card-driven arena combat game. It combines three genres: MOBAs, classic 90s tactics games, and TCGs without booster packs. It plays 1 to 4 players in 60 to 180 minutes for ages 14 and up. Siege runs as 2v2, The Battle for Dhaara, and 1v1, Skirmish for Vyati. It launches on Gamefound September 8, 2026.

Where it sits on the shelf

For the best strategy board games for adults who like direct conflict, this slots in comfortably beside the heavier arena and skirmish titles without displacing your euros or your dungeon crawlers. Gaming Caravan, a former League of Legends commentator, ranks it number four out of 490 games and says it “truly is in its own category.” I would not put it above every classic on my shelf, because they do different jobs, but as a 2026 arrival it is one of the most confident I have seen. If tactical, high-interaction games are your lane, add it to your watch list. The Gamefound campaign is live now, and you can even try Trials of MAYA on Tabletop Simulator before deciding whether it deserves a permanent place among your own best strategy board games.

Rulebooks and public metadata are on BoardGameGeek, the full breakdown is on the official page, and the campaign is live on Gamefound now.
